Karwar: Bhartiya Kisan Sangha district unit office bearers submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul demanding a separate Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard in Ankola taluk and purchase all produces of farmers through the APMC.

Sangha  District President Sivaram Gaonkar said the karwar-ankola APMC situated in the city was of no use for farmers. Farmers in Ankola taluk had been facing problem in selling their agriculture produces. Good quality watermelons were cultivated in ankola and it was supplied even to neighbouring districts.

But the traders purchase the watermelons ar a cheap price from the growers and sell them in other districts at higher price. The traders earned profit while farmers suffered loss, he said. Therefore, a separate APMC should be established in ankola itself to ensure better price for farmers, he added.

Many farmers had been taking over other professions due to lack of encouragement for them to take up the cultivation of various crops. Farmers who had cultivated coconut, banana, arecanut, paddy, groundnut, cashewnuts, pepper and fruit suffered loss due to lack of peoper marketing, the explained.

He said scientific price should be provided for all the crops. Agriculture based industries should be set up in all the taluks. Storage houses should be constructed to keep watermelons and other fruits in the coastal area, he demanded.

APMC member Ganapati Naik, Seeta Gowda and others were present.
