Karwar: As construction and widening of Don Church Road in Karwar began, a local woman protested by lying on the middle of the road and obstructing the construction work.
According to sources, coal was laid on Don Church Road by the City Municipal Council 15 years ago. Since then, a woman living nearby has been claiming ownership of half of the road. As this road was very dilapidated, the CMC has now approved a plan to construct it into a concrete road. When work on the project began three to four months ago, the woman reiterated her claim and sought a 15-day respite from the CMC through her lawyer to prove her ownership of the site. The CMC had also stopped the work for two and a half months for some reason. Meanwhile, the woman concerned obtained a stay from the court. Documentary evidence was then presented in court by the CMC, after which the court lifted up the stay granted to the woman and allowed the CMC to continue its work.
After getting permission from the court, Karwar CMC resumed road construction work. The woman reached the spot and started quarreling with CMC executive engineer RP Naik and other officers. CMC officers tried their best to convince the woman but she refused and started lying on the road. Then, out of frustration, the CMC officers, with the help of Municipality staff, shifted the woman to one side of the road and the continued the road construction work.
