Karwar: "There is a need for creating awareness among people about human rights and non-government organisations (NGOs) and elected people’s representatives had a major role to play in this regard, said Inspector General of police (IGP-Training and Recruitment) Alok Kumar.
He was speaking at a programme on ‘Human Rights Awareness’ and inauguration of the district unit of Human Rights Committee of Divekar Commerce College in Karwar on Wednesday, he said that the NGOs and leaders should go to every village to create awareness among people about the human rights. The human rights violation would not stop until people realised what human right is.
Speaking about the human rights violation, he said that violation by government or any of its officials were offence as per the law. Death of under trail in jail, unlawful arrest of people, police filing false cases, unlawful behaviours as far as women and children cases were concerned, atrocity on physically challenged, caste discrimination were all amounted to human right violation. He said, as per law, it was the government’s duty to protect human rights.
Speaking on the occasion senior advocate SP Kamat said, human rights were being violated at every stage in society. Police and committees should take extra care in protecting human rights of women and children. Some unscrupulous people were using women and children to carry on illegal activities. They were also promoting child labour system.
National Human Rights Committee State unit President Robert D’Souza said, the committee was striving to enhance the awareness level about human rights among people and thereby put an end to human right violations. He said, the committees reach would be expanded if people extended their support to it.
UK Human Rights Committee President Vijaykumar Naik, Vice-president Raghavendra Kamat Sirsi, General Secretary Nagaraj Naik, National Unit Standly Kanikraj, KS Shivaraj, Shivamogga Unit President Santosh Belleikeri, Divekar College Principal BH Naik were present.
