Bengaluru: Five accused in the Mysuru gangrape case that shook the cultural city of the state have been arrested, police said here on Saturday.

They are being brought from Tamil Nadu, police sources said.

Home Minister Araga Jnanendra confirmed that the police have succeeded in arresting five of the accused.

Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood is on his way to Mysuru from Bengaluru. He is expected to hold press conference post noon.

The police managed to zero in on the accused based on the data collected from the crime spot. One of the vital data was elicited from the mobile phone, police said.

The accused had contacted the father of the male friend of the rape victim and asked him for a Rs 3 lakh ransom.

The accused are all natives of Tamil Nadu origin and are said to be working as laborers.

On August 24, a student was travelling with her male friend on a bike when the gang of six waylaid the victims at Lalitadripura near Chamundi Hills.

This incident had caused a huge uproar not only in Mysuru but across the country.

It also created political rumblings in the state with the Congress party in Karnataka alleging a total failure of law and order. It also charged the police and state government for attempting to "close" the case by not registering adding section 376 under the IPC in the case.

The rape victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The male victim, in a FIR, had complained that he was waylaid and brutally assaulted.

He saw the gang dragging the victim into the bush when suddenly one of the accused hit him on his forehead with a stone and he fell unconscious.

The accused then called the male victim's father asking for a Rs 3 lakh ransom.

After coming back to his senses, the mn asked about his female accomplice, then the accused pulled her out of the bush and made her sit next to him.
