The incessant rains continued to lash the Uttara Kannada district on Wednesday too. As a result, the inflow at most of the reservoirs and lakes has also increased.
The Dharma reservoir in Mundagod taluk started overflowing on Wednesday. The watershed areas surrounding Gerusoppa reservoir in Honnavar taluk are receiving heavy rains.
Of the highest storage capacity of 55 metres, the reservoir has 50.67 metres of water as of Wednesday. As a precautionary measure, measures would be taken to release 5,000 cusec to 22,000 cusec of water into the Sharavathy river through the radial gates of the reservoir.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited has clarified that during the electricity generation, the outflow of water from the reservoir would be the same. Hence, it cannot be considered as an additional outflow.
In a press release, Tahsildar Nagaraj Naik stated that every day up to 20,000 cusec water is being released from the reservoir to the river after using it for power generation. However, with continuous rainfall for over a week, the inflow is increasing in the reservoir. Hence, along with releasing water for electricity generation, a decision has been taken to release water at other times too.
However, the additional release of water would not increase the water level in the river, he clarified.
People residing adjacent to the river bank have been asked to be safe as a precautionary measure, he said.
