Bhatkal: Heavy rains and strong winds continue to strike in all the talukas of Uttara Kannada district, as a result of which agricultural lands, coconut orchards and roads in many villages have been turned into ponds. Due to the continuous rains, normal life has also come to a standstill while the fear among the people living alongside the river banks have increased.
Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has issued a directive to the residents of the low-lying areas along the banks of Kali river in Karwar to remain vigilant as the water level in the Supa Dam, which has been built on the banks of river, rose sharply. Because, if the rains continue to hit further, the water inside the dam may cross the danger mark, after which there is a possibility of releasing excess water in the river immediately.
As of yesterday, the water level in the Supa Dam was only eight meters away from the danger mark. It may be recalled that KPCL has for the first time issued a public alert in this monsoon.
Many families living along the Gundabal river in Honnavar have also been evacuated due to rising water levels. Fishing boats from Udupi, Mangalore and Goa have been anchored at Karwar port due to high waves at sea due to heavy rains. Some houses in Ankola have also been damaged due to rains.
Along with heavy rains in Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola and Karwar, there were reports of intermittent rains in Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Joida and Mundgod.
