Heavy rain expected on Friday too in Uttara Kannada; holiday declared again for schools in Bhatkal and four other coastal taluks

Bhatkal: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its red alert for heavy rainfall to Friday as well, following Thursday’s forecast, covering five coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada district. In light of the advance warning and as a precautionary measure, a holiday has been declared for all anganwadis, primary and high schools in Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola, and Karwar on Friday, June 13, 2025.

Bhatkal tahsildar Nagendra Kolashetty, while sharing the circular issued by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) with the media, informed that the IMD’s Bengaluru office has forecasted heavy rain in Uttara Kannada from June 11 to June 17, 2025, and in view of the intensity of the weather, schools will remain closed on Friday as well. He stated that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of children and to prevent any untoward incidents.

According to the circular, the DC has exercised the powers granted under Section 34(M) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to issue this directive.

The order clearly instructs the deputy directors of the Department of Women and Child Development and the Department of Public Instruction in Karwar to ensure strict implementation of the directive and to make necessary adjustments in the academic calendar to compensate for the declared holiday.

It is worth mentioning that Bhatkal is a Muslim-majority area where all the schools under Muslim management already observe Friday as a weekly holiday.
