Bhatkal: A newly built emergency treatment facility, “Geeta Vaman Shanbhag Emergency Care Unit,” constructed with donor support at the Bhatkal Taluka Government Hospital, was inaugurated by district in-charge minister Mankal Vaidya.
The facility has been funded by US-based businessman Vaman Ramanath Shanbhag in memory of his late wife Geeta Shanbhag.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Vaidya said private support is vital for the development of public institutions such as hospitals and schools. Praising the donor’s philanthropic initiatives, he said individuals who contribute to society through charity continue to be remembered by people for generations.

Senior doctor Dr Savita Kamat said the Bhatkal government hospital, which began as a cottage hospital in 1955, has expanded over the years with the support of donors and well-wishers.
Narendra Nayak of the GSB Kalyan Committee said the hospital stands as a good example of cooperation between the government and private contributors in strengthening public healthcare.
Among those present were Administrative Medical Officer Dr Arun Kumar, in-charge Assistant Commissioner Praveen Karande, Incharge THO Dr Priya Gonsalves, entrepreneur Vasant Ganapayya Shanbhag, and other officials and community members.
