Drug-free Mangaluru run postponed

Mangaluru: Mangaluru city police has postponed a proposed run for drug free Mangaluru planned for July 1 to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking due to inclement weather conditions. M Chandra Sekhar, city police chief said the city police will announce the next date for this run aimed at creating awareness among various stakeholders on the ill effects of using drugs of any kind.

The city police carried out a police station wise awareness drive against drugs starting from June 25 and concluding on July 1. Educational institutions were reached outwhere police officers interacted with school/college students .

On the enforcement side, Chandra Sekhar said the city police has registered 18 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act under a special drive carried out last week. Police has identified 16 major suppliers of drugs, especially ganja from Kasargod in neighbouring Kerala and succeeded in arresting eight of them.City police is in constant touch with their counterparts in Kasargod district to plug the supply routes, he noted.
