Mangaluru: Minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs U T Khader has denied the allegations of money being distributed to woo voters in Gundlupet by his car driver during the campaign for by-election.

He said that the allegations were false, politically motivated and were aimed at confusing voters in Gundlupet constituency. "They (BJP) know very well that Congress will win in Gundlupet and they also have understood that they are going to lose. They have been spreading rumours about me after getting a clear hint that Congress is heading towards victory," Khader said.

He questioned those who made allegations as to why his driver should distribute money to only one person. "I was not there in that particular vehicle and I was engaged in election campaign at that time. I have no idea what actually happened. That car driver was party worker who was ignorant about code of conduct. When I sought details, the car driver told me that he was paying money for the bottled drinking water he purchased from a nearby shop. My question to those who made allegation is why did the driver has choosen to give money only to one person. If he was distributing money to voters, then he could have given it to more people," Khader said.

Brushing aside the allegation as a common tactics during election campaigns, Khader said let the Election Commission take a decision. "Election Commission has served notice on their candidate in Nanjangud constituency for violating code of conduct, but it has not become an issue. Let them file complaint to the Election Commission. We are ready to face any inquiry. Let them hold campaign for their candidate and stop spreading rumours," Khader rued.

He said that people of Gundlupet are wise enough to consider the truth. "People of Gundlupet and Nanjangud may be innocent, but definitely not fools to believe in such rumours against the party. Congress will win in both constituencies. None of their chief ministers have ever visited Chamarajnagar town fearing the taboo that those who visit the town will lose power. However, chief minister Siddaramaiah has visited the town six times and released crores for the development of Chamarajanagar district," Khader added.
