Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat president Meenakshi Shanthigodu on Monday expressed her displeasure over the slow pace of progress in works. She said that it is because of the apathy of officials and panchayats concerned.

Presiding over the monthly Karnataka Development Programme review meeting here, Ms. Shanthigodu directed officials and gram panchayats to speed up National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme works and take up at least 50 individual works in each panchayat.

Vice-president Kasturi Panja directed officials concerned to speed up the construction of buildings for anganwadis in the district. She also asked officials to include formation of shoulder drains in the work of road construction.

Chief Executive Officer P.I. Sreevidya said space should be made available to open anganwadis in government school premises. She has also warned KRIDL officials of disciplinary action if they do not take up construction work of buildings for 10 government pre university colleges sanctioned for the district within a week.

She also directed executive officers of taluk panchayats to identify suitable space to set up nurseries for tree saplings in each gram panchayat.
