Couple arrested for serial theft cases in Udupi and Uttara Kannada

Kundapur: Kundapur police have arrested a couple in connection with the burglary that took place on the night of July 6, 2020 in Bejari village in the taluk.

The accused have been identified as Rajesh Naik alias Raju (42) and his wife Padma Pamri (37), residents of Toll Nakha in Dharwad. A total of 202 grams of gold jewellery, 1683 grams of silver and two bike bikes were seized from the accused. It has been reported that the accused had earlier committed thefts in Kundapur, Udupi, Manipal, Gangolli, and Dharwad. Rajesh, who was jailed in the old case, was released on bail in July 2020. According to police sources, during interrogation, Rajesh said that after his release from jail, he committed thefts at temples and houses in Bhatkal, Murdeshwar, Gokarna, Kumta, Honnavar, Karwar, Kundapur, Suratkal, Mulki, Manipal and Gangoli.

On the night of July 6, 2020, Jai Raj Shetty had gone to attend his father-in-law's last rites, during which a theft reported in his house, wherein a jewellery worth of 9,88,500 rupees were stolen. On the same night, Jai Raj Shetty had lodged a case with the Kundapur Police Station, following which the police had registered a case under sections 454, 457 and 380 and started an investigation. 

Furthering the investigation, police managed to arrest the two on November 12 from Dharwad. In the investigation, a team of police personnel including Kundapur Police Station SI Sadashiv Guruji, Kundapur Traffic SI Sudarshan, Shankar Narayan, PSI Shridhar Naik and others were involved.

It may be recalled that thefts took place at different spots in Bhatkal on October 24, 25 and 26. After admitting to being involved in the thefts in Bhatkal, the Bhatkal police can now take them into custody to gather more information.
