KARWAR: A farmer was allegedly beaten up by two traffic policemen and two others at his house at Hiregutti for not giving a bribe of `100 to the policemen in Kumta taluk recently.
Shantaram Prabhu, a farmer from Hiregutti, went to his field near Khandagar Hulase village on Sunday. While returning at night, police personnel — Mohan Gowda and Nitya — at Hiregutti check-post stopped him and asked for his two-wheeler documents.
Even after he showed all the documents, he was asked to give `100. But when he refused, the policemen left him, Prabhu said. While heading home, Prabhu complained to the police control room.
After an hour, Gowda and Nitya along with forest guard Nagaraj Naik and 108 ambulance driver Nagaraj Ganapati Nayak came to Prabhu’s house and beat him up in front of his wife and aged father. When his wife and father rushed to rescue him, they were also beaten up, he alleged.
“They threatened that they will arrest us on false cases if we try to file a complaint. The next day we went to Gokarna police station, but those at the station refused to register our complaint,” Prabhu said.
On Tuesday, Prabhu approached Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Vinayak Patil in Karwar and the latter asked Gokarna police to register Prabhu’s complaint. The Gokarna police sub-inspector confirmed on Tuesday evening that they have registered an FIR against the four.
