Mangalore: Coast Guard Karnataka on Sunday organised a special coastal clean-up drive to mark its 41st Raising Day at Panambur, Malpe and Tagore, and Kodibag (Karwar) beaches.
A release from the Coast Guard here stated that the drive was aimed at increasing awareness about Swachh Bharat and Swachh Sagar Abhiyan undertaken by the coastal security force.
More than 400 volunteers, including students from various educational institutions in the area, representatives from voluntary organisations, municipal bodies, coastal security police, etc, participated in the drive.
Residents of the localities too participated in the drive, the release added.
With the efforts of everybody 215 kg of debris and waste were collected from Mangaluru and 205 kg from beaches in Karwar. The garbage merely consisted plastics, polythene bags, wrappers and other non-biodegradable waste.
Deputy Inspector General K.R. Suresh, Commander Coast Guard Karnataka, was amongst the volunteers.
