Karwar: The Union Government has release Rs 11,500 crore towards payment of compensation to those who lost their land for the Seabird Project in Karwar and Ankola taluks, said district BJP president K G Naik.

He told reporters here on Friday that thousands of families lost their homes, properties and horticulture land for the Seabird Project in 1986.

The then Union Government had given a meager compensation, which led to protest by the land-losers for nearly three decades. Now, the Modi-led BJP government has released adequate compensation as well as development funds to them, he said.

“Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar informed MP Ananth Kumar Hegde about the same in New Delhi on Friday. The MP, in turn, called us and broke the news over phone. A clear picture about how much is going to be given as compensation and how much will be set aside for development works will be known within 2-3 days,” he added.

“For adequate compensation, the land-losers along with the BJP workers have fought for many years, from lower courts to Supreme Court. Finally, all families are going to get compensation and for that, we are thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Parrikar,” he added.
