Fri, 06 Jan 2017 18:28:42    Press Release

Kozhikode: Aster MIMS Kozhikode in association with Dr Moopen’s Foundation, is organizing early Cancer Detection Screening (CDS) camps at Nelliampathy Grama Panchayat. The camps will be organized at Government LP School Chandramalaand Higher Secondary School, Polachirackal on 8th January, 2017. The camp will also be extended for the entire tribal community at Cherunalli and Vazhakundu

The camp will be inaugurated by the Panchayat President M Jincy in the presence of P Raju, Secretary, NelliampathyPachayath, U Basheer, Exicutive Director, Aster MIMS, Kozhikode, Dr Rahul R Menon, CEO, Dr Hamza P, Chief of Medical Services, Dr PrasanthParameswaran, Senior Oncologist, Dr. V P Salim, Senior Surgical oncologist, Aster MIMSandLathifKasim, Manager, Dr Moopen’s Foundation. The inauguration of the camps will take place at Poolachirackal Higher Secondary School at 9 am.

Dr Azad Moopen, Chairman, Aster DM Healthcare said, "We came to know that there is only one primary health centre in the panchayat that serve for 3000 residents. Cancer if detected early has a greater chance of being treated successfully. While many do not have an access to the hospital, some do not go in for a check-up due to cost factor or ignorance. This is an attempt of a model project for the government, which is similar to the one we conducted successfully in Perumanna Panchayat last year, to address this alarming situation. I ensure to extend our support in further evaluation and management of patients who are detected with the disease.”

The members from Nelliyampathy Panchayat have approached Aster MIMS with a request to conduct a detailed camp there and Aster MIMS has taken up the project. A lot of plans and preparations have gone into the implementation of this project.

The hospital called for social workers from 9 colleges in Northern Kerala, where 75 students participated. Since, physical tests were hard to be practical for the check-up of 3000 members in the panchayat, the students camped there for 5 days and collected data with a structured scientific questionnaire.  The data was collected from 2,800 people, where 450 of them were identified to be at a high risk of developing cancer.

A team of 8 doctors and nurses from the Department of Oncology from Aster MIMS will be attending the camp to make the programme more effective and beneficial for the participants.  The high risk patients of 450 identified through the initial phase of the questionnaires will be invited to the cancer detection camps for screening. The participants with symptoms of the diseases will be invited to Aster MIMS for detailed diagnosis for free of charges.

Dr. Rahul Menon, CEO, Aster MIMS said, ‘We have always focused on the preventive and diagnostic aspects of healthcare and early detection of cancer is an important tool in the fight against this dreaded disease. This initiative is part of our rural community intervention program that works with the community to create awareness and diagnose cancer early through camps in areas where facilities for screening are limited.”

In Perumanna Panchayat the survey was conducted for 32000 residents out of which 1250 were identified to be in a stage of developing cancer. Out of them, 100 were invited to Aster MIMS for screening and 2 were identified with cancer and treated in Aster MIMS.

After the successful Perumanna Camp, this is the second project that is being organized by Aster MIMS and DrMoopen’s Foundation in 6 months.
