Mangaluru: A student died when a boat capsized in River Nethravathi at Uliya Hoige in Ullal on Sunday. The locals have rescued five other students from the capsized boat.

The deceased is Renita, a resident of Meeyapadavu, a final year student of Milagres College.

On account of church feast in Thokkottu, five students had been to the house of one George at Uliya Hoige. After the meals, the students had asked George to take them on a ride on a boat. Accordingly, they were taken on a ride in River Nethravathi.

The mishap occurred when they were a few metres away from the shore. A strong wind was responsible for capsizing of the boat.

Local residents Martin, David, and others, who saw students crying for help, rushed to the spot and rescued them. Though they were rushed to hospital, Renita breathed her last.

"I saw boat capsizing from my house and immediately swam to the spot,'' Martin said.
