Bioluminescence makes Kumta Beach turn radiant blue

Kumta: A bioluminescence made Kumta beach turn into radiant blue after the Coast of Kumta was observed with a strange development in the recent days. The environmentalists observed bioluminescent plankton glow waves at various beaches in the region.

The bioluminescent glow spotted at various beaches in Kumta, Gokarna and Karwar after sunset untill sunrise. Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. The waves looked glowing in a bluish colour.

Bioluminescence occurs widely in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as in some fungi, microorganisms, including some bioluminescent bacteria and terrestrial invertebrates such as fireflies.

According to Marine Biologist Shivkumar, it first appeared on Lakshadweep Beach in 1949.  In 2011-12, bioluminescent glow was also spotted on Mangalore beach. Also, three years ago it was appeared on the coast of Karwar.

As the news spread, the social media was abuzz, after which people in hundreds rushed to have a view of this rare scene.
