Bhatkal: Rain takes a break, paves way for business in Ramzan market

Bhatkal: The Ramzan market in Bhatkal, which had lost its scene due to continuous downpour, finally recovered after the rain took a snap break on Thursday.

The Muslims of Bhatkal have begun their Ramzan fasting one day earlier than others and therefore, they will be concluding the period of fasting on Wednesday. They will also be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr a day in advance.

The Ramzan market which was set up nearly ten days back went on in full swing for three to four days. But after that, the business faced a period of lull as the rain picked up. With increase in intensity of rain, the shopkeepers from far off places who had taken the shops in auction to make business during Ramzan, were left disappointed. But the rain took a break for the entire day on Thursday making way for good business.

People, especially women, children and youths, thronged the market and there was not an inch of space left there.

Zeeshan Ali Akbar of Port Road who has a shop of toys, clothes and caps in Ramzan market said that the business was not satisfactory during Ramzan this year. They can recover the loss if the rain offers some respite for another three to four days.

Communal harmony

Makeshift dry fruit and food stalls with spicy aroma of Kebabs and curries, shops selling bangles, ornaments, garments, decorative articles, home appliances, toys, chappals, utensils etc make the Ramzan market in Bhatkal lively.

Muslims from Bhatkal and other places do not miss to visit this market. Not only Muslims, even Hindus from Honnavar, Kumta, Byndoor, Kundapur and other places visit the market. This gives rise to a festive atmosphere reflecting communal harmony.

CCTV cameras installed

To avoid untoward incidents during Eid-Ul-Fitr which is round the corner, additional police personnel has been deputed on duty in Bhatkal. These policemen are keeping a hawk’s eye on the market. Also, 26 CCTV camera have been installed in the market for security reasons. The security beefed up under the guidance of ASP Anoop Shetty and CPI Prashant Nayak.
