The deceased have been identified as Rahim (30), his wife Rubina (25), her sister Yasmin (23) and their 16-year-old nephew Subhan. All were residents of Fakirkatte in Kapu of Udupi district. Rubeena’s mother Maimuna (50), who was rescued, is admitted to a local hospital. She is said to be out of danger.

According to sources, all the five members had come to the nearby Kajur Dargah. While returning from the dargah, the family stopped at the rivulet. Subhan entered the water for a bath and got stuck in the water. Subhan’s brother-in-law Rahim tried to rescue him and he too got stuck. His wife Rubeena, followed by Yasmeen and mother Maimuna too got into the water to save the others but none could come out.

It is said that hearing the cry of  Maimuna, local residents  jumped into the rivulet to save the family. Rahim, Rubeena, Yasmeen and Subhan were dead when they were brought out of the water. Maimuna, who was still breathing, was immediately taken to the hospital. It is said that she is recuperating in a hospital.
