Karwar: According to the details released by Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer Dr. Harish Kumar, a total of 2657 candidates have registered victory for the Gram Panchayat elections in Uttara Kannada district which ended in two phases.
Notification was issued to start the election process for a total of 2662 wards of 227 gram panchayats of the district. Elections were not held in 5 of these wards due to rejection of nomination papers or non-filing of nominations. After the deadline for filing nomination papers expired, 187 candidates were elected uncontested, and polling was held for 2470 seats. Among these elected candidates are 1386 women, 302 candidates from Scheduled Caste and 242 candidates from Scheduled Tribes have won, while 572 candidates from backward classes have won. Similarly, 1415 candidates from general category have registered victory.
