Mangaluru: Very soon, 12 more railway stations in the State would get high-speed free Wi-Fi facility for passengers. Seven major stations in the State have the facility now.

RailTel, a public sector undertaking of the Railway Ministry, is executing the project announced in the 2016–17 Railway Budget. The Railway Board had entrusted RailTel with the task of installation of Wi-Fi facility at 400 stations across the country in collaboration with Google, under the Digital India initiative of the Union government.

Presently, free Wi-Fi is available at KRS Bengaluru City, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru Central, and Kalaburagi stations through RailTel. Belagavi station has got the facility under the MPLAD scheme. With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.

In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.

Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.

One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.
