Mangaluru: An 11-year-old girl hanged herself using a veil at her house in Kumdel of Pudu village in Bantwal taluk.
The deceased has been identified as Pooja Shree, daughter of Prasad, who owns a small jewel works at Kadegoli near Thumbay junction. She was studying in fifth standard of BA school in Thumbay. The incident took place around 3.30pm.
It is learnt that Pooja Shree had returned home with her elder brother from the school. After returning, she had gone to her room and slept. The girl's mother had gone in her room to check on her at around 3pm. However, when she found her asleep, she returned to her normal chores. After some time, when there was no activity from the girl's room, her mother became suspicious and knocked on her room.
Finding the door locked, she panicked and broke open the door only to find her daughter hanging from the ceiling. Police said the girl had hanged herself using a nylon veil which she had tied to another rope connected across two windows and was meant to dry clothes. Police said the veil tragically carried the weight of the tiny frame of the girl.
It is said that the family had performed a pooja at their house on Sunday to ward off bad omens which they felt were present in the house after a tenant, an elderly woman, who lived in the first floor of their house ended her life a couple of months earlier due to serious health issues. Police suspect that the girl who could have seen this unfortunate incident might have been affected by it.
A case on unnatural death report has been registered in Bantwal rural police station.
